Tried install again using lisati's info (#365, #366 of this thread) and now have working install of AVG 8.5 Free for Linux. It would be better to redirect stdout --> /dev/null IMHO, and use some other hard coded file handle for debconf. I have to use the command every time for updating database. I really don't think a virusscanner is needed for Linux as a primairy tool.

It got installed in Applications->Accessories.
